How to Overcome Sales Objections as a Web Designer and Close High-Paying Clients

Are you getting too many objections on your sales calls? You know the ones I’m talking about—where the client says it’s too expensive, they’ve had a bad experience, or they aren’t sure if they really need your services right now. It can feel like no matter what you say, nothing changes their mind. But here’s the thing: you can change their perspective, and in turn, you can close those sales and land the high-paying clients you deserve.

Let me take you through some of the most common objections you’ll face as a web designer (or even a writer), and how you can tackle them in a way that feels authentic, builds trust, and gets you that signed contract.

When I First Started—The Sales Struggles

When I first started my web design business 9 years ago, I had to deal with sales objections on almost every call. Clients would tell me my prices were too high or that they’d had bad experiences with other designers. At first, it felt disheartening, like maybe I wasn’t good enough. But over time, I learned how to handle these objections—and, better yet, how to prevent them from coming up in the first place.

Let’s talk about the five most common objections that web designers and writers face, and how you can respond to them like a pro.

1. “It’s too expensive.”

How many times have you heard this one? It can be frustrating because you know the value you bring to the table, but your potential client doesn’t see it yet. So, instead of justifying the price, shift the conversation to the value of what you offer.

It’s not about what they’re spending—it’s about what they’re getting in return. When clients understand that your services will increase their leads, drive conversions, or save them countless hours, the price suddenly seems like a smart investment. I’ve had clients who hesitated on price, but once I showed them how my design increased their lead conversions by 25%, they were sold. ROI speaks louder than price tags.

2. “I’ve had a bad experience with a previous designer.”

This one is tough because it taps into their fear. Maybe they paid another designer who didn’t deliver, or they had a website built that didn’t perform. The key here is to empathize and differentiate yourself by showing them how your process is designed to avoid those issues.

One of my clients came to me after working with a designer who missed deadlines and didn’t communicate well. She was hesitant to start again, understandably so. I walked her through my process, showing her the timelines, the check-ins, and how we’d collaborate at every step. We aligned on expectations, and by the end, she felt more comfortable moving forward.

3. “I’m not sure if this will really work for my business.”

This is where a lot of web designers miss the mark. The client isn’t sure if your services will provide the results they’re looking for. This is your opportunity to show them proof of what you’ve done for similar clients. Highlight past client wins and personalize your solution to their unique challenges.

I remember working with a small business owner who was hesitant to invest in a redesign. She wasn’t sure a new website would actually help her attract more customers. I showed her specific results from other clients in her industry, breaking down how the redesign had increased their traffic and conversions. Once she could see that this wasn’t just about aesthetics but about growing her business, she was ready to go.

4. “I can do this myself.”

Oh, the DIY objection! I’m sure you’ve heard this one. Many business owners think they can handle their website on their own, but what they don’t realize is how much time they’ll spend and how difficult it can be to achieve the same professional results. Your job is to show them the value of their time and how much more they could accomplish by delegating this task to you.

A client once told me she’d been working on her website for months and still wasn’t happy with it. I gently pointed out that she could have been using that time to focus on other areas of her business while I took care of the website. She realized that by hiring me, she’d be able to free up her time and get a much more polished final product. It wasn’t long before she was onboard.

5. “I don’t need it right now.”

This one comes down to urgency. Your client might not see the need for a new website or content at this moment, but they might not realize what they’re missing out on by delaying. You have to explain the opportunity cost of waiting. Every day they don’t have a high-converting website could mean missed leads, lost sales, and wasted time.

I had a client who wasn’t sure if she needed to invest in a redesign before the busy season. I explained how getting ahead of the curve and launching the redesign before the rush could help her capture more leads when demand spiked. Once she understood that waiting could cost her potential clients, she saw the importance of moving forward.

Anticipate Objections Before They Happen

Here’s the trick—don’t wait for these objections to pop up on sales calls. Anticipate them before your potential clients even get on the phone. How? By creating strategic content that addresses their concerns in advance.

Think about the questions you ask on your intake form or in your email communications. Can you structure those questions to pre-qualify clients so that, by the time they book a call, these objections are already resolved in their minds? Can you create blog posts or videos that talk about these common concerns and how you handle them? Your website, sales page, and content can do a lot of the heavy lifting for you, positioning you as the go-to expert before the conversation even starts.
