How to Start a Web Design Business Without a College Degree
Do you want to start a web design business but feel like clients won’t take you seriously because you don’t have a college degree? I totally get it! That fear of not being “qualified enough” can be paralyzing. But let me tell you something—you don’t need a college degree to create a profitable web design business. How do I know? Because I built my own five-figure business without one.
Let me walk you through how I did it and the mindset shifts that made it all possible.
The Early Days: From Hospital Admin to Web Designer
When I started my web design business back in 2015, I didn’t even know I wanted to be a web designer. I had just graduated from college, but not in anything related to design—I had a degree in hospital administration! Web design wasn’t even on my radar.
I created my very first website because I wanted to start an online store. I’d just finished reading Girlboss by Sophia Amoruso, and I was so inspired to create something of my own. But, like most new entrepreneurs, I didn’t have the budget to hire a web designer. So, I did what most resourceful people do—I learned how to build a website myself. I watched YouTube videos, read articles, and dug into Google to find everything I needed.
The Moment It All Clicked
Fast forward a bit—I had created a few websites for different business ideas I had (an online store, an event planning business, you name it). Each time, I was more focused on getting the website up and running than I was on the business itself. It took me a while to realize that what I actually loved doing was designing the websites.
That’s when it clicked. I didn’t need to chase different business ideas; I needed to focus on web design. But there was one problem: I didn’t have a web design degree, and I worried that potential clients wouldn’t take me seriously.
Do You Really Need a Degree? Nope!
Here’s the truth—you don’t need a college degree to be successful in web design. What you do need are the skills to solve your clients’ problems. That’s what really matters. When I got my first paying client, it wasn’t because I marketed myself as a professional web designer. I simply knew how to fix a specific problem she was having with her website’s functionality, and I offered to help.
She didn’t care about my credentials—she cared that I could deliver results. That’s the key. If you can solve a problem for your clients, they’ll hire you, degree or not.
Mindset Shifts to Build a Successful Web Design Business
If you want to create a thriving web design business without a college degree, here are some of the key mindset shifts that helped me—and that will help you too:
1. Everything is Figureoutable
One of the biggest lessons I learned is that nothing is too hard to figure out. Yes, things can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re just starting out. But here’s the thing: if you want it bad enough, you can figure it out. Google, YouTube, and online courses are your best friends.
In web design, whether it’s learning how to code a new feature or figuring out SEO, there’s always a way to find the information you need. Don’t let the fear of not knowing everything stop you from moving forward.
2. You Don’t Need to Be an Expert to Get Clients
You don’t need to be a web design guru to start getting clients. All you need to do is be one step ahead of your ideal client. If you know how to solve a problem they’re struggling with, that’s enough to get started.
When I started, I didn’t see myself as a “professional web designer.” I just knew how to help people with their websites. And that was enough to get me hired. Focus on solving your clients’ problems, and you’ll build your expertise along the way.
3. Embrace Imperfection
One of the hardest things to accept is that not everything you do will be perfect—and that’s okay. When I started, I made plenty of mistakes. But those mistakes helped me learn and improve. Don’t be afraid to get out there, pitch yourself, and make connections.
You might not have a flawless portfolio when you start, but that’s how you build one. Each project you complete adds to your credibility, and soon enough, you’ll have the proof of results that new clients will be looking for.
How to Stand Out in a Crowded Industry
If you’re worried about competition in the web design industry, I get it. There are so many web designers out there, and it can feel impossible to stand out. But here’s the thing: the secret to attracting high-paying clients is not in having the fanciest portfolio or the most credentials—it’s in positioning yourself as the solution to your clients’ problems.
When you understand the specific problem your ideal client is facing, and you can clearly communicate how your web design services solve that problem, you’ll start attracting the right clients. And those clients will pay you well because they know you’re the person who can help them.
Building a Five-Figure Web Design Business
I built my five-figure web design business by being resourceful, learning as I went, and focusing on my clients’ needs. I didn’t have a degree or formal education in web design, but I had the drive to figure things out and the courage to offer my services.
If you’re passionate about web design, don’t let the lack of a degree hold you back. You can learn everything you need online, and with the right mindset and strategy, you can create a profitable business.
