Hey, let me ask you this.
Do you get stuck and frustrated when you set up a “to do list” for yourself and you never get through it? You might do the first 3 things and then just dump the to do list in a corner and never look at it again. I’m guilty too!
Today I want to give you something that will have you on the right direction to start accomplishing all those things that you set up to do, yet can’t seem to sit down and get done.
After all let’s face it, the majority of the “to do lists” that people make are doomed from the start.
Lets say you said you were going to do something, then you got so hyped about it that you even set a deadline and then shit! Nothing gets freaking done. You see, when you don’t meet the goals of your to do list, you then assume that making a “to do list” is just not something for you.
And I totally agree with you on that, because why would you try to do something again and again and expect different results. Isn’t that the definition of insanity. You bet it is.
I can sit here and tell you all the crappy reasons why your “to do list” isn’t working. But am not going to do that. On the other hand I will tell you exactly all the things that you must do different in order to get those different results that you are looking for.
First, you need to get to the bottom of what is the end goal of your to do list.
No I’m not saying to just know what you want, but to also narrow it down to be crystal clear and defined.
Instead of writing down “Work on my website”, take it to next level by getting clearer. For example you can say “Work on my website copy”
Now ask yourself “how more specific can I get”. For example, “what pages will I work on first, second and third, etc.”
Second, is the task concrete, can you tell if you ever will meet this task or not?
Let’s say your task is to “to get clients”. Clearly this task is not measurable at all. So just ask yourself, how would you know when it’s time cross this task off your to list? What Counts and What doesn’t?
The task to “land 5 clients per month” is something you can measure because you can count the number of clients that you landed.
Now, take a second to face the reality of your situation and really know if it’s possible to achieve this task. You need to be aware if everything you need to achieve the task is within your control.
(Heads up: Don’t take this step lightly.)
This is where most people get it all rotten up.
They try to do everything at the same time, and go at a faster rate, as if anyone else was chasing after them. Yeah, they may be able to keep on running on a crazy schedule for a few weeks. Then they get burned out and stop all together.
Hey, but we both know that you’re nothing like that. So today, once and for all you are going to get much more done by taking small natural easy steps that will get you to the finish line more quicker.
You do this by telling yourself the truth…
Do you really care about the task at hand. And if you do. Why does it matter to you?
Your “to do list” must be relevant for you to be jazzed and excited every single day. No matter what goes on that day, your decision to take action should be non-negotiable.
Know this; you might just say that you need to be doing something different because you observed it from others. Don’t let yourself get trapped in that feeling. You have your own path and you’re own way of doing things.
Relevancy saves you from trying to force yourself to do something that you’re not all that energized about.
After all, you know deep in your heart that you will only do the things that you really care about.
Just because you’re fired up about it doesn’t mean it’s a smart choice.
Lastly, do you have a deadline?
THEN JUST GET IT DONE!
The most important thing about a having a to do list that works, is that it must have a completion point by a certain date. It cannot, I repeat, it cannot be an open-ended project. This doesn’t mean that you can’t move the deadline as you see fit.
Do yourself a favor. Set yourself up for Success.
We can argue later about the knowledge of getting things done versus living in the flow and just letting things run its pace.
But if you decide that you want to have a “to do list”, I recommend you give yourself a fighting chance to follow through and complete whatever you desire by being strategic about it.
I truly believe that you are capable of accomplishing whatever you put your heart and soul into doing.
Now I’ll be delighted to hear from you.
In the comments area, tell me what’s on your to list? Has it been working? If not what is one thing you will do today in order to make your to do list work for you?
